My friend and I, both in our early 50's, are considering a move to St. Pete - if a job offer is secured. Suggestions on neighborhoods to consider living? We want a reasonably safe, clean area that is in walking distance to something - stores, cafe, marina. I want an area where I can maintain the delusion that I can bike ride. We will be in the area in two weeks for an interview and will "scout" the area. Any suggestions on sights we should see to get a feel for the "real" St. Pete's? Thanks.

Default Downtown

absolutely! It has everything you mention and more. You can even put your bike on a bus and ride the Pinellas Trail or go to the beach and ride around although there is no boardwalk. You can also drive to Ft. De Soto which is a fantastic county park take the pooch to the doggy area or ride your bike there or just swim. D/T there are real stores, including a Publix, not just cutsey tourist shops, banks, a good branch Library, The Pier, which has restaurants and boating activities to name a few. There are nice places to live, museums and a branch of USF if you want to take some courses. That's as real as it gets. What I like about St. Pete is that it is "real." Of course these places ahve been maintained to appeal to tourists but they don't have that Disneyesque feel of a Channelside or what they're trying to do to Ybor in Tampa. Downtown St. Pete is a real neighborhood where people live, work and play.
BTW you really CAN ride your bike there!
It is as safe as anyplace and great for people our age as well as the younger crowd.

As for neighborhoods, if you have some $$ to spare- downtown/old NE is the best for your criteria, next would be Crescent Lake area.

I keep hearing about the old northeast as a nice area to live...I was wondering: what are the actual boundaries of the old northeast and what zip codes does the area have? I'd like to look at some homes In the area. Also is there a sketchy part or is it all nice?

If your budget allows, I would recommend Isla del Sol.

St. Pete has some great areas. You may want to check out Old Northeast section which is a great neighborhood just north of downtown St. Pete. That area is biking distance (if you do decide to bike) to downtown. There are a lot of new urban living locations if you are looking for condos/towhouses right in downtown

good luck
