I am relocating in April and would like some info...I have pretty much narrowed it down to living in South Tampa and since I am not there yet I cant check out the specific area in person yet..

Can anyone tell me what streets or areas to avoid in South Tampa area?/...I have been searching online for rental houses (prefer house over condo/apt) in the area and while some of the houses look great, i know looks can be deceiving...

Also if anyone can recommend an alternate website or company to search rental properties in South Tampa that would be appreciated...Ive already tried tamparent.com, tamparelocators.com and craigslist.

Thanks!

Privately owned rentals may be found on Move.com.

South of Gandy (SOG) has some iffy spots around Manhatten/Dale Mabry. Not all the area is bad though. If you get a name it is probably easier for the folks here to tell you 'yeah or nay'.
SOG is fine around Bayshore.

North of Gandy is much better.

Jessica,
I too have been navigating around Tampa online and I too have isolated South Tampa as a safe, reasonable, centrally located area, especially around Bayshore Blvd. I'm looking at Harbour Island and Davis Islands too. Recently I've begun to consider Westshore as well. I can't tell if Westshore centrally located or what the walking neighborhood is like, but the condo and home views are quite appealing. Keeper, thank you for the South of Gandy advice.

Westshore isn't what I would consider a walkable neighborhood, like parts of Hyde Park and SoHo. There is one area on Westshore Blvd near Euclid that has a few stores, meat, fruit market, restaurants and a bar. Gandy is a hwy but I wouldn't consider it walkable. There are all kind of stores, car lots, restaurants on Gandy. Of course, you can walk but everything is so spread out it really isn't convenient in 90+ heat.

South Tampa is convenient depending on where you work. I wouldn't recommend living there if you work in New Tampa, not that it isn't doable it is just a long drive.

I really had good luck on craigslist. I heard Gaspar properties is really good. Davis Island is more "historic" and older construction, whereas Harbor Island is newer like all the posh condos. It depends what you can afford and what type of housing you want to live in. I also looked on Vast Home and Free Online Classifieds | Cars, Homes, Jobs, Pets & More - Oodle.com Also, yahoo has a great rental site too.

I heard the exact same thing as cjtex. That's why I am interested in both Harbour Island and Davis Islands. What about Hyde Park Properties?
