Does South Tampa have its own police dept.? Or does it reply on the Tampa police? I want to buy a house in SoTa, but whenever I visit that area, I never see police patrolling the streets, which makes me a little nervous. Where I come from in VA, you see police patrols all the time. Which is I guess why where I live, crime is practically non-existent! In fact, last week I saw a VA state trooper removing real estate/solicitation/campaign signs from the medians/grassy areas of the road; they must not have anything better to do!

If South Tampa has a lackluster police presence, I wanna know about it before I buy there..........

South Tampa is in the jusrisdiction of the City of Tampa. The Main headquarters are in downtown Tampa, but there are three separate districts, South Tampa is in District 1. Want to know more about District 1..here ya go>>>Patrol District One

You will not see officers walking the streets, but go through a red light, and they are there in an instant. There are several satellite offices in South Tampa(like the Target store on Gandy Blvd). Unless there are festivals, events, traffic, is when you will see them patroling(like Hyde Park Art Festival, or Thursday through Saturday evenings along South Howard Avenue.

South Tampa is very heavy on its neighborhood associations and watch programs, and alot of Community Involvement.

They're all out trying to beat the guiness record for most police officers at a single speed trap! LOL

My highest count to date: 9 at Ben T Davis Beach.

Just had to post n update...

Today I counted 13!!!! police thru Ben T Davis & Rocky Pt conducting one of those speed traps. What is with that??? Shouldn't they be out policing the city? Really need 13 cops to do it?

There were about 15 police cars all grouped together in the Movico parking lot in New Tampa this morning. I pass there on my way to work each day. I live in South Tampa, but have the great misfortune to work in that desolate, remote barren suburb called New Tampa. It's such a ****ty, crappy, boring place. Not only is it impossible to get to from anywhere else in the city - you literally cannot get there from here - but it's laden with police behind evey bush and sign. Every morning I see the hapless office worker pulled over and getting the ticket. Perhaps it's really just revenue generation.

Most South Tampa neighborhoods don't have cops regularly patrolling them. New Suburb Beautiful has one, but that's all I know. The cops aren't nonexistant, though. Most of the time they're just sitting in parking lots waiting for calls. Fortunately, I've tried to keep a mental list, in case I happen to be speeding by.

Here's a few common places. Again, I guess they're just waiting for a call...or speeders.
El Prado, between Lois and Manhattan
Behind the Heart Association building, MacDill and Morrison
Shell, Dale Mabry and Euclid
Bay to Bay, between Lois and Manhattan
Old KFC, Henderson and Dale Mabry
Old Chevron, MacDill and Swann
Westshore Pharmacy, Westshore and Leona
Shell, Westshore and North A
Marathon, Kennedy and Howard

Dont forget about the Target on Gandy and Dale Mabry, there is a whole police sub station in that building.
