I prefer Fort Lauderdale. There's a lot more going on. The city has more to offer in terms of events, arts, dining, shopping, etc... And the winters are considerably warmer than in St Pete. I personally find that the water is nicer on the Atlantic side, but that the sand is nicer on the Gulf beaches.

Also if you are picky about water quality, please educate yourself about Tampa Bay's skyrocketing red tide/algae problems

We have been here a total of 32 years. Red Tide is not new, nor does it occur every year.

When we were on the Atlantic coast there was tar and jellyfish to deal with, I will stay on the gulf coast.

Well, it occurred in 2017.

2018.

2019.

So far every year for the last three. Affecting not just water quality but also air quality.

Actually the water off of the west coast beaches is not Caribbean blue... it's more dark green, almost brownish. The bluest water you will find in FL is all the way down the peninsula.
