Many of those are probably executives, lawyers, high end programmers working at those businesses downtown. A vast majority don't want to live in a downtown or do so. Most large cities will have high earners living downtown. Even St. Louis that has issues with crime downtown has lofts with educated people with good jobs who don't want to drive far for work.

I personally don't like stifling traffic big cities downtowns have.

Chicago has traffic but they also have a mass transit system were you leave the driving to them to get you to and from the city. You can't call Tampa's trolly a mass transit. But some how they want to expand it I don't get it. Tampa will never be able to compete in getting fortune 500 companies to relocate there till they take of their mass transit problem and their roadways. So a majority of collage grads go were the money is and most times its north or the west.

That was a very interesting read, thanks for posting it. Some of the complainers here really should read it.

Don't let a little thing like facts get in the way of a good story.

People just want to complain about Tampa. Apparently they have yet to learn that they can leave at any time.

Smile It cost to live in Paradise

I'm an RN and wages here do not compare to wages I'd make up North. The main reason the wages are so low is because highly educated professionals move here because of the weather and lifestyle. Because of this you have a lot of people saturating the job market, especially in my field, Healthcare Management. It keeps the wages lower. The big drain is the car insurance, doubled when we moved South. No accidents, no children, no claims, doubled. It's like a small car payment. Electric and food is more expensive here as well. We live in a very small house compared to the home we left up north. Home insurance is another high price item. Moving here was a lifestyle change for us, for sure.

As far as Tampa goes, I really like Tampa. I work Downtown (office) and there are new buildings being built daily. It's is a super cool place to work. I prefer the beach, so living there would not be my thing however, there is something to be said for walkable living and lifestyle. They have a hospital, a river walk, all types of events there weekly. There is always something to do and the beaches are close by. We have a couple of vacation rentals at the beach in Pinellas. People come over from Tampa for the weekend. We get a lot of local traffic. I travel locally for work also. There are a few busy areas, Ulmerton Road and Alt 19. Since moving here they have widened both roads and made lots of improvements. The traffic is much better and I don't have much problem. When the Snowbirds come down, it get's a little messy. More accidents and less efficient traffic flow due to those who use the left hand lane incorrectly.

One problem with food is that there isn't much competition for Publix here in FL anymore since Winn Dixie keeps shrinking. Maybe that will change as Amazon gets into the food market.

This can based on your specialty.....if you lived in a small town up north and were a labor and delivery nurse you would make X. If you were a neonatal intensive care (NICU) nurse at a level 1 trama center in south FL you would easily make more money than "up north." Both jobs are considered pediatric RN's right?

If you are a home health care nurse you are competing with Haitians and Filipino nurses in Florida so of course your wages will be low as they can hire them cheaper.
