I may be relocating to Tampa to take a position with USF. There are soooo many apartment complexes and options it's overwhelming. I've heard that, and I can see that, the area within a couple miles of the university itself is not so great. Are there options farther away (but preferably not much more than 5 miles distant) that would be viable? I'm planning to spend up to about $800 for a 1BR. Relatively safe and quiet is all I need, single no kids and a young 43 (riiiight), but I'd prefer not to get too far out into the burbs. I know South Tampa is very nice, but pricier and a longer commute to USF. Any help would be appreciated - thanks very much!

The Falls on Fletcher is really nice, and within your price range for a 1 bedroom. I enjoy it, and am happy with the staff, grounds, up keep, attention to tenants requests, etc. It's also gated, and I feel safe here. It's close to USF, and just off the I-75 exit. Bruce B Downs is also a great recommendation. Jade at Tampa Palms, for example...

Thank you both very much for the advice! From looking, it does look like Bruce B Downs up toward Tampa Palms is very nice, and I'll also look at those on Fletcher.

Cheers!

BBD is a nice area however traffic can be really BAD in either direction. Fletcher near I-75 has some newer properties for rent. I think there are some along Morris Bridge Rd now between Fletcher and Fowler. When I lived in Tampa and attended USF, I lived down in Temple Terrace. IMO, it placed a nice degree of separation between me and college student life. (Staying up to all times of night and hearing screaming young adults who had too much to drink was not for me.) Busch blvd east of 56th Street had apartments and condos available.

Try Lucerne Apartments off Providence in Brandon; they have large floorplans and screened in patios. They have great prices and they really keep up with the property. It's the best place I've lived so far.

I would look at the Lodge at Lakecrest on McKinley Dr.--about half-mile south of USF. Yes, I know you're supposed to steer clear of "south and west" of USF, but this complex is brand-new and borders Busch Gardens and all commercial stuff, not in a bad neighborhood at all. Gated, nice amenities, and they have a special on (small) 1-BR right now for $830.
