There are parts of Tampa that have high rates of crime and parts that have extremely low rates of crime. And also keep in mind that the RATE of crime paints a more accurate picture than the AMOUNT of crime, which is a real problem if you get all of your crime news over the television. With the amount of people in the bay area, it's not surprising that there is a lot of crime reporting on the news. That doesn't mean that there is a huge crime problem. Tampa has actually gotten a lot safer over the past few years, having nearly a 40% reduction in part one (serious) crimes in the incorporated city.

Still, I've worked burglaries and auto burglaries in Culbreath Isles just like I've worked them in Robles Park. For the most part though, it seems as if the crime in the nicer neighborhoods is more opportunity crime than anything else. If you live in a nicer area, secure your belongings, and are aware of your surroundings then you should have no problems. If you're looking for the cheapest home/apartment possible, think it's a good idea to walk down Nebraska Av. at night, or leave things in plain sight in a parked vehicle, then there's a good chance you'll end up being a victim at some point.

Be very careful in Ybor City. Its not so much the random crime, but the people looking to prey on drunk people.
