Hi all--I'm packing up a ton of stuff--kids' bikes, toys, a loveseat, etc--none of which really fits in my car--and I wondered if anyone knows for sure which charities still pick up. I can't seem to find info in my yellow pages or online, unless you want to give away your car.....

Purple Heart picks up monthly and will give you a receipt. Their telephone number is 813-899-2780.

Have you tried freecycle.com? You post what you have, then people email you if they want it.

The Kidney Foundation does. They have a thrift store on Dale Mabry where you can drop stuff off or they'll send out a van.

IIRC Kidney foundation will pick up but furniture has to be in good condition. I think they make runs in certain neighborhoods on certain days. They may not pick up in your area until next week, if you missed the run for that week.

Are there certain items that these companies will or will not take? I just moved back here from NC and am trying to clean out my mothers house. Finding all kinds of "stuff". Some things are okay and some are just "junk". Need some help getting rid of it all.

Purple Heart does not need spare hangers (an art teacher will take them), nor do they want used books (not sure why). That could have changed since I last asked...give them a call.

Salvation Army will also pick up, tel # 727.541.7781.
The other site is Freecycle Tampa or Clearwater which is a group in Yahoo, where people post things for free.

You can use Freecycle or Craigslist and usually people will come pick up just about anything. Just be aware that you will not be able to claim your "donations" as charity, and the people who take your items will probably sell them for a profit.
