I am *NOT* talking about the Check Engine Light codes. I am talking about ALL codes (B, C, P and U) even if the CEL is not illuminated. I've been to Advanced and Autozone and they both said they can't see any codes other than the basic P / CEL codes which I don't have. I've heard conflicting stories and been given conflicting information on where to go. Obviously a dealer or repair shop can do it - and charge a lot for it. I really don't want to buy a scanner if someone knows of a place in the area. Thanks.

You may want to try the Automobile Forum. That is where I post about my old lady (2006 Hyundai Elantra).

But someone here may respond. Good Luck!

They use a basic code reader. You’re looking for codes specific to a vehicle, which you’ll either have to get a higher level reader for or go to a dealer or automotive shop. I doubt anyone that has one of these (I own several for my cars) would do it for free, as these are not cheap.

My thoughts exactly. You're not getting this done for free anywhere.

A dealer *might* if you have a good relationship with them (i.e. you service there often and you'll likely have the work done there). But my guess is you don't have a relationship w/ your dealer if you're asking.... Alternatively, you can try a vehicle specific automotive forum to see if anyone in your area has the tool and will scan for you for a small fee or a 6 pack of beer. Not uncommon on automotive forums.

I don't know what B, C, P, and U codes are. Are you talking about things like ABS error codes, Body Control Module codes, as well as ECM codes?

Most readers will only generically read ECM codes, and the standard ABS codes from the CAN bus. Anything specific to the BCM is going to require a specific reader that's programed for that make / brand of vehicle.

They're pretty cheap online though, and they're getting better every day. If you have a laptop, that's the cheapest route... you just buy the software and the USB to ALDL connector cable and have at it.

You can get some pretty decent readers on the Island of Big Wimmen for a little over $100 from companies like iCarSoft that are specific to a particular car brand. They're quite helpful, even if you're not technically adept, at identifying problems so you can be somewhat educated when you take the car in for service.

You may not be able to tell the shop what's wrong exactly, but you can always use it to keep them honest as well...
