My family and I are moving to Tampa in a month. Given our work locations and the continuing downward spiral of the real estate market, we're probably going to rent a house in the Hyde Park area, at least initially. The only problem, despite hours and hours on the internet we can't find many listings or not as many as I'd expect for such an area.

We're moving from the Washington DC where most rental houses are managed by a property manager. They handle all interaction with the tenant such as rent collection and maintenance/service issues. A bigger manager handles dozens of houses. Once you find one you like, it's a great way to look at many houses.

Can anyone comment if this is common in Tampa? So far most houses we've checked into are managed by the owner. If it isn't what we want or is already rented, they don't have any leads on other properties. Is there a better place to look?

In South Tampa there are mainly three companies that do property management services that you might want to check out.

1) My company Smith and Associates - Tampa Real Estate - Tampa Florida Real Estate - Homes for Sale Tampa Florida Look up Larry Pollin's listings (he is the rental specialist)

2) Toni Everett The Toni Everett Company

3) Hoffman Reallty Hoffman Realty - Tampa, Florida - www.HoffmanRealty.com

If you haven't visited craigslist.com that seems to be the most common way to market a home in the area. Good Luck!

Default Property Management companies in South Tampa

TampaSteve's post was good information and is still true.

As a Realtor in South Tampa I can confirm that Larry Pollin at Smith & Associates has an excellent reputation for residential leasing and I recommend him. Smith & Associates no longer offer Property Management services so if you need property management you will want to contact the other two companies:

Both MaryAnn Hoffman at Hoffman Realty and Toni Everett at The Toni Everett Company have great reputations for Property Management in South Tampa and I can also recommend them. MaryAnn seems to specializes more in the $1,000 to $3,000 per month rent range and Toni in the $3,000 and up rent range.

For rentals in South Tampa I have found these sites to be good:
www.Craigslist.org
Rentals.com
AHRN
HotPads
MLS
