My family and I moved to Fishhawk Ranch from Charlotte, NC seven months ago. We are renting a very nice house in Fishhawk. We have two small children and are expecting a third. We also have dogs.
I am not happy living in Lithia, FL at Fishhawk. There is NOTHING to do out here. We are more city people...this community is great for families but, I am miserable in such a remote community. It is like a Fishbowl!

We need some advice from any happy family people in South Tampa. We have looked at real estate in some neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Beach Park etc. We can afford a home in the range of 1 to 2 million dollars - so we are hoping to find a decent house with a nice yard.

Any success stories from anyone that loves South Tampa with children and pets would be so helpful to us. We do not want to be selfish and live in the city area when Fishhawk might be better for our children. Elementary schools are a big concern as well as community opportunity for our family. - Thanks!

Mabry Elementary is supposed to be really good, and there is a nice mix of homes around there, from older small single-family homes to massive new mcmansions There are a few excellent schools around but it's hit or miss, so don't assume that a nice house will lead to nice schools. Look over near Bayshore in the Hyde Park area--if you see something you like, then check out the schools! For that budget, you can probably get in that area and find something really pretty, walkable to dining and shops, and in a good school district.

I agree, check out SoHO too. Some SOG schools are OK, but you still need to check out any school no matter where it is located.

How about Westchase? The schools are good. They have a little shopping center right there on the main drag, plus you are not far from Citrus Park Mall with tons of stores, movie theaters or even Carrollwood. There are doctors and St. Joe's clinic too. The down side is most of the lots are small.
