Are you looking for a beach (tourist or less crowded), sightseeing, partying ?
Are you staying for a few hours or overnight?

I would suggest going to Clearwater or St. Pete beach. You can take HWY60 to Clearwater or I275 to St Pete beach, check out Pass-a-grille.. Go to the Hurricane for lunch. Be prepared for LOTS of traffic especially if you go on the weekend, especially on the trip back from the beach especially if you leave after 3 pm.

If you want a not so touristy beach go to Dunedin Beach. Windsurfers and Hobie's sail off the beach on the causeway. You can take a ferry to Caladesi (see picture thread) for the beach. Quiet beach with just a few ppl and boaters.

Other places to check out are Ybor city. Old section of town where the cuban cigar makers lived and worked. Has bars, stores and restaurants. Not the place to be late at night, it gets pretty rowdy and even dangerous after 10pm.
