I'm out in Denver area and have been to Clearwater a couple years ago. Loved it and want to come back with my wife and 2 young kids for a quick get away in March. (Quick, maybe 3 days). Purpose of the trip is for beach time, but in truth I wouldn't mind if my wife (whos never been) might just love it enough to think about moving. Shes balked at the idea of giving of mountains, skiing/snowboarding and the seasons. With that in mind, would we be better off at a resort/hotel in Clearwater or St Pete? A surfing beach would be prefered.

I've checked a few travel sites and read a few reviews, but am hoping some locals may have some suggestions, too.

Don't wanna do much of anything but spend time at the beach. Want to stay at a decent hotel/resort ON the beach, without even having to cross the street. Maybe walk to a few blocks for lunch/dinner, but no tourist stuff or house hunting, etc.

Any local advise would be much appreciated.

I think of St. Pete more as a family beach and Clearwater more as a teen/20s area. There are lots of great places to eat and do. The Gulf Coast isn't really known for surfing.

I definitely suggest Pass-a-Grille Beach, there are some nice little resorts, and its a small little beach village just south of St Pete Beach without all the high rise condos/hotels.Check out www.floridasbeach.com (broken link) for availability. If its resort that you want, the Don Cesar is my fav on St. Pete Beach, there is also Tradewinds Resorts up the street.
Also look at tripadvisor.com, and the St Pete Beach or Clearwater sections for LOTS of reviews by regular folks.

Wow!! Great info on all those sites. I hadn't considered going in that direction, but they look to be a great way to go. Actually economical too. Thanks.

St Pete seems to be a pretty cool place. Thanks for all your help.

Dont forget that march is prime spring break time, and although clearwater beach does not have the crazyness like panama city or miami, it still gets crowded.
The Don is great, its expensive, but its really nice. Maybe some else might know, do you still have to pay to park there? I think it was $10 a day...?

The Don is the one.

No waves of any significance on the Gulf Coast to surf on.

Just read about a race called 'St Pete Bay to Bay' on March 18th, might try to work that into the schedule. Does that happen to be one of the Spring break weeks or is it bascially all month?

Then again, it looks like 'off-season' starts April 15 so lodging gets much cheaper. I might be better off waiting a month. I would think April and May would be great times to be there?? Whats that about?

So if one lives in Tampa area, where would they go to surf? Whats closest?

I head to Cocoa Beach, an easy 2 hour ride up Interstate 4 to the Beachline(528) straight into Cocoa Beach.
