i'm moving to tampa from pittsburgh (almost exactly 1,000 miles) in august and i believe that i can fit all of my belongings into a cargo van...barely. i won't be taking my couch, and i'll disassemble most of my wooden furniture (ikea type crap) to fit it. the rationale behind this is that it will be far cheaper to rent a cargo van than a 10' box truck.

using a corporate code, i can rent the cargo van from enterprise for a week at $361 including tax. it will be driven down to tampa, and then driven back to pennsylvania by someone helping me move who will be returning home (they'll stay a week, hit up the beaches, etc.). i estimate a newer van will likely get about 13-17 mpg on the highway, meaning i'll be looking at about $315 in gas each way (or about $1,000 for the cargo van total, including rental cost, gas, tolls, etc.).

meanwhile, a 10' box truck from budget, u-haul, etc. costs about $700 to begin with, PLUS tax and gas that will likely run about $515 for a one-way trip.

anyone ever make a move of that distance with a cargo van instead of a box truck? anyone know of any moving/freight companies that might be able to ship my stuff for me cheaper than me driving it even in the cargo van? it could be available to ship august 1, and wouldn't have to arrive in tampa until august 16 or so.

thanks in advance.

PODS will ship and store for you until you get here and they give you a definite arrival time unlike moving companies.

I wanted to use a cargo but because it's not allowed on one way interstate moves I ended up using Penske (MUCH BETTER THAN UHAUL).

You may be surprised if you really check your stuff it might not fit in a cargo van. Check out PODS it's easy. You just have to know your stuff might bounce around because of the suspension and stuff.

We have used cargo vans from Enterprise to shuttle furniture and possessions back and forth to our Asheville home. As the previous poster mentioned, you may not be able to get all your stuff in a cargo van, better check it out first. If you don't have a lot of stuff, this might work out just fine for you.

We sold that home last month and used ABF U-Pack - they are a great company - you can either rent space on their trailer or do what we did - they have "Relo-Cubes" which are like small pods. We used this method because we also needed temporary storage. We packed them up and they came and got them and took them straight to storage. This method was much more econonmical for us than a moving company, and propbably on par with renting a crummy u-haul. PODS of course, is another alternative. And Penske IS definitely better than U-haul - U-haul is the bottom of the barrel, IMO.

Good luck!

An alternative to PODS is ABF. ABF gave me a quote of $925 (using a $25 discount for booking online) to move my stuff 1200 miles from Texas to Tampa. The do the same thing at PODS...cubes they move for you & pick up when you're done. Prices do vary with the size of the container you use. I was going to use the small parking slot size one, which seems like it would be roughly equivalent to a van, or slightly bigger.

Now that you mention it I think it was ABF I got a quote from. They seemed very professional and sent several emails to quote and follow up. I was going to use the small one too, well, two of them actually. But I ended up leaving alot behind.

Just an extra FYI: Since I'll be in TPA for only a short time, I ended up deciding to rent a fully furnished place and it wasn't much more than an unfurnished place...don't know of that would be of any help in your particular situation. Also, I was told that if I did want to get an unfurnished place and not bring furniture that the Salvation Army on Nebraska gets a lot of nice furniture donated to them by one of the big furniture stores there...just a little though to save $. I know it can initially be expensive to get set up in a new area.
