Meh, I disagree with this. Corporations hire locally as well. Would you support bass pro shops when they build here? Starbucks hires at least 10-15 LOCALS a store. Same diff really. What about Chilis? They hire hundreds of locals in the bay area.

Starbucks is at USF also at Fowler & about 50th, also at Fletcher near Lettuce Lake. As well, Temple Terrace area has Einstein's and numerous locally owned coffee houses.

I haven't seen anything on Dillards leaving University Mall. It's not a regular store but a clearance center with incredible prices. I'm pretty sure that mall will redevelop very nicely over the next 10 years, just my sense of the area combined with past discussions by developers, but I don't know of any immediate plans other than what follows...

Recently there was an article on what might be a fun concept if it flies. We actually had a similar but smaller type place in Lauderdale back I think in the 70s or 80s. It was really fun but I don't know why it eventually closed. Instead of dinner theater it's dinner movie. I think it's a great idea but with so much entertainment available at home, well, we'll see if it plays.

University Mall to get Studio Movie Grill theater/dining concept | Tampa Bay Times
"Studio Movie Grill, a theater and dining concept, has signed a lease for 57,000 square feet in the former Frank Theatres site.

The theater will open later this year after major renovations. It will have 14 screens showing first-run movies and seating for 1,500 people.

University Mall will be Studio Movie Grill's first location in Florida and 18th location nationwide. The Dallas-based operator has 180 screens in eight states and is in the midst of a nationwide expansion."

I'm not sure about that set up but they must be making some money if expanding. The one we had decades ago was set up more with regular tables, more of a cross between restaurant and theater.

Bringing back a thread from 2008?

I try to buy local, and not just coffee.
Yes national companies employ locals as well, but buying local means helping someones ambition stay alive. I'd rather keep many small "mom-and-pop" companies going, rather than just having 1 or 2 Walmart type stores.

And more of the money stays local as some national companies are actually owned by companies based overseas... or use overseas accounts to avoid paying taxes.

But speaking of local coffee shops. If you're in the USF area, there's Felicitous. It's right next to the campus off of Fowler in a house-turned-business. Ironically, it's located behind the shopping center that has a Starbucks.

Felicitous - Home

Oh, I'm not saying I don't buy outside of the "local circle" but I was coming from the angle that the single-owner type businesses need local support more than a corporate-backed business such as Chilis or Bass Pro Shop. Hey, I'm all for most any business that will bring jobs to the area but I just think they have a better shot at succeeding based on their already proven brand reputation.

Posting that as a reply then ending it with "get your head out of the sand."
Pot meet kettle.

I'm actually shocked that this thread was made alive again since I posted it in 2008 and so much has been changed over there...positive and negative.

Maybe it is time for people who want to write more about this to start a new thread and close or leave this thread as it was as a 2008 thread.

It's a thread revival. Thread necrophilia. I do it all the time instead of producing new threads - using the search to bring up old topics is better to revisit rather reinventing the wheel and having to provide the same recommendations, thoughts, etc over andover.

I understand and it can be a very good tool for many subjects but in this case the thread is not relevant anymore since it was about something specific that happened in 2008 and when people start to read the first page they may not notice the date and think the info is wrong but it was true at the time...
