I'm seeing a lot of listings on Craigslist for rentals in Seminole Heights. Is this a safe area?

Yes and no. If any are in SE Seminole Heights STAY AWAY! You really need to stay well west of Florida Ave., and far north of MLK. You are probably seeing lots of rentals in the area I would not recommend. I used to own property in this area, and it was the worst mistake of my life - constant breakins, and lots of drugs and prostitutes in this area -my sister could have been killed (she was robbed 3 times living in my place!)

So basically, I can't recommend it, unless you get in the nicer section, which will be rather pricey.

Good luck!

I have a few friends that live in the Heights, rule of thumb is to stay west of I-275(pref west of Florida Ave). There are some really nice older historic homes, mature oaks, great neighbors, and riverfront parks..close to downtown, very easy access. If you are in the area, grab a bite at Bungalo Bistro or Cappy's or Front Porch, talk with the neighbors, walk the neighborhood areas.

Not a walkable area, pretty much surrounded by major roads with lots of traffic. It became poplular (esp. for the gay crowd that wanted to become suburban family types) and was "the next big thing" in neighborhoods. Alot of good was done, but the area surrounding it refuses to gentrify making islands of the few nice areas

Thanks everyone!

Argh! It's so hard to find a house when you aren't living there!

As someone mentioned earlier, yes and no. Try to stay west of Florida avenue and I-275; the stretch of neighborhood east of there is anything but safe. Also, avoid the area between Columbus Blvd and Cass Street along North Boulevard - this area is full of crime as well, and it was the place where I got mugged. In general, the further west you are, the better.

We've been looking at houses that are generally less than 10 blocks west of I-275 and from roughly Hillsborough Ave north to the river. From the posts it sounds like that should be an OK area (hey, I've read there's a new Starbucks). Any thoughts?

I agree that area is not too bad. The area around FLorida is spotty, one street will be fine and the next pretty rough.

IMO, just be certain the property is really in Seminole Heights. I've seen property advertisements purporting to be SH, but NOT close at all... You can see the historic district maps for Seminole Heights, Hyde Park & others on the City of Tampa's website at Historic District Maps.

Oops! Guess I should have read all the threads before replying...my bad. I think most of the posters meant to say stay WEST of I-275 and EAST of Florida (though there's a really nice area south of Sligh and east of Nebraska too). While I'm on a role... South of Hanna and North of Osborne should cover most of it.
