I am interested in moving to the Gulf side of Florida from NJ. I have Lupus and a rare auto-immune disease. I recently went to visit friends in the St. Pete area and I could not believe how much better I felt. It was so unbelievable! After the 1st day I was walking without a cane, very little oxygen, and had very little pain in my joints.

I decided that I would like to spend the hard winter months in Florida and then maybe go back and forth. I am thinking about maybe buying a small place in a adult community where I can get some exercise in the pool, fitness center etc. I would most of all like to meet other people my age to do things with.

My children have both graduated college and are on with their lives. I am alone and I know it is going to be tough moving away from my family and friends to a new state. I am looking to form relationships where I can develop some new skills and activities. I have always wanted to learn bocce ball and mah jong. I would like to join a book club since I never had time to do a lot of things while I was a single Mom raising my children.

It is really confusing looking through the MLS listings. I would like to have some help from anyone who is willing to share any thoughts or ideas with me. I need guidance in this area as I don't have a lot of money to put down and my income is low because I am on a pension and disability.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello! I was so happy to read your post. I also have lupus and have found exactly the same thing - when I'm in Florida I feel a lot better. My doctors have strongly suggested I move to Florida when I retire to improve the quality of my life. My DH and I are planning to do just that and are taking steps to make it happen.

My parents live in St.Pete, so I've spent a lot of time there and done years of research. From what you have described, I think Sun City Center would be a great fit for you. If you go to realtor.com and plug in Sun City Center you will see what is currently available. There are homes at various price points and with various amenities and now is a good time to buy because prices are down. Good luck and best wishes.

Cool A Fellow Lupus Sufferer ...thanks for your advice

Hi Sunnydee, Thanks so much for your kind words of advice. I have also had this same experience happen when I visited Hawaii. But that is too far from my family and very expensive. I am excited about this new phase in my life but I am still a little lost. I will certainly look into Sun City and I will let you know what happens. Butterflies are beautiful!!!

Sun City Center is a great suggestion! There is a development in New Port Richey call Heritage Springs and one in Hudson called Heritage Pines. All three are focused on active retirement living. Good luck!

Both great suggestions. I did hear that hudson was some place that has to be investigated...some good areas and other areas are not very well maintained. Have you heard anything like that? I don't know for sure.
thanks for taking the time to help me out. Best wishes!!!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DESCRIBE SEVERAL GOOD IDEAS AND NAMING THE COMMUNITIES IS A GREAT HELP SINCE I CAN INVESTIGATE FROM HERE IN NJ. IT'S HARD TO KEEP GOING DOWN THERE TO SEE PLACES AND COMING UP EMPTY.
YOUR ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. CIAO!

Thumbs up This is what i call taking action!!!! Wow

[quote=Carollinca;4764482]I own a condo just North of Port Richey that I bought for my own affordable retirement in Florida having lived there in my younger days. I'm still working in California and my situation has changed in that I'm working here much longer than anticipated and may never move there now. I have a relative living in the same community in Florida called Beacon Woods. It's about 35 miles north of Tampa and 5 minutes from the beach.

The condo is in a 55+ community that has clubhouse, pool, golf, classes, and all kinds of socialization opportunities. mod edit

I WILL BE CONTACTING YOU VIA E-MAIL TODAY AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING MORE ABOUT THIS INTERESTING PROPERTY. THANKS AGAIN.

Default Hertigage Springs

Hi, Read you post this afternoon. I live in Hertigage Springs. I moved there in March. My two bedroom villa is next to the club house and pool. It is very nice there, many things to do. I would like to move, be closer to my daughter in Tampa.

If you want to be near the beach and want over 55, close to shops, so you can walk if you are up to it, close to medical centers, Suncoast Hospital and Largo Med Center, on a main bus route and much more, try Lakeview of Largo South. Lakeview of Largo (not south) is not so good, as they don't have the same (great) management company also condos do not have washer dryers in unit. There are lovely and well maintained gardens, and great cleaning company keeps the outdoors looking wonderful. I know there were ground floor one bedrooms from $70s and 2 beds on the ground floor from $120s. low and fixed costs for monthly charges on cable/trash/water/sewer. Non flood zone, non evac zone, but less than one mile to beach.
