I am considering relocating from St. Louis to the Tampa area because of a job opportunity at USF. However, I've only been to Clearwater on vacation and would love any information I can get about the area from people who actually live in the area.

Here's what I'm looking for: safe, but with a community feel to it, able to walk to local restaurants, coffee shops, parks, yoga studio, farmers markets, etc. I'd love to be close to the beach, but not sure if that's possible because of the commute.

Here's what I'm not looking for: cookie-cutter homes, sprawl, homes and areas with "no soul" or character.

I'm planning on renting for a year to make sure that I like the job and the area before I try to buy a house, but would still love any info you all can share with me! Thanks so much-I really appreciate it.

Sounds like South Tampa areas like Hyde Park, Harbour Island and Davis Islands, Palma Ceia might fit the bill for your desires...beaches would be Bay beaches, not as nice as the Gulf which would be about 30 minutes west. You would be going AGAINST traffic to USF if working normal work hours, which would be about a 20-25 minute commute.

To complement tampaguy03's suggestions, you might also look around Old Seminole Heights. But, it's about an hour's drive to the Gulf of Mexico. Following is a boundary map from the City of Tampa Website Old Seminole Heights - Maps

Also just for more choices is Temple Terrace which is really close to USF. The City of Temple Terrace has re-development plans for their downtown. You can read more about TT on the following website Welcome to the City of Temple Terrace (http://www.templeterrace.com/index.htm - broken link) This would be the furthest from the Gulf.

If you choose the Gulfside location over convenience, I'd suggest you look from Dunedin up to Tarpon Springs. This should put you within ~25 miles (one way) of USF.

Default Thank you!

Thanks so much to both of you for the helpful info. It's nice to have some familiarity with the area before I visit.

Temple Terrace is a pretty nice area very near USF.

you might want to look at heading to somewhere a little north like wesley chapel (seven oaks) it is a little more family oriented than south tampa- which is really nice also - but completely different... mall is being built just across the way and it is about 7 miles from usf good luck!1

Thonotosassa and even Plant City should be considered also. You can get from Plant City to USF in about 25 minutes on good traffic free back roads. Thonotosassa is located between Temple Terrace and Plant city and is a really nice place with gorgeous homes, but not a lot of character. Plant city is very similar to south Tampa, except without the yuppies and the exagerated prices. You can get a real nice place in the historic district within walking distance of the library and courthouse for the same price as a shack in South Tampa. Plus, if you crave the nightlife, Disney's Pleasure Island and Downtown Disney are about a 40 minute blast up the interstate, about the same time as it takes to get to St. Petersburg.
