My Boyfriend will graduate from college in December with a Mechancial Engineering degree, he already has his Captians license and we'd very much like to move to Florida (hopefully Tampa). There are alot more positions available to someone with a Captains License in Florida than there are waaaaay up north, which is where we currenlty live. His other dream job would be to have his own Custom Car shop (or work at one) as that's what he does as a side hobby, and again florida would most likely be a much better area to support this. If anyone has a good idea as to where in florida you could most easily find a position in one of these areas that would be great. One example would be a 3rd mate postion on a tugboat. We are very excited about moving to Florida so any advice anyone might have about our move would be greatly appreciated.

Also I was wondering what areas of Tampa we should stay away - if there are any?

I would try the Tampa Port Authority as a starting point (TPA). They might be able to direct you to the companies that use the port regularly. Port of Tampa handles Cruise ships, A Shrimp Boat Fleet, Container Ships and Bulk haulers (Oil, Phosphate, Gypsum, etc) There is also the Port of Manatee (Port Manatee,Florida.Port Authority of Manatee County,Florida.) which is on the southeast side of Tampa bay. There are also a lot of gambling/dinner cruise/tour boats that operate out of the Clearwater/St. Pete area. You can google them too. You could also contact the coast guard auxiliary squadron. They might have a few leads for you. Lastly, there is the Tarpon Springs Sponge Dock Fleet on the Anclote River in Tarpon Springs. They are usually more family centered, but you never know.

As far as staying out of certain areas, Tampa is a mix of good and bad. The areas around the commercial side of the port are "less than desireable", as are the areas directly North of I-4 and East and West of I-275. A lot of areas are being renovated so you will have to just look around.
