I really wouldn't walk through that area. It's part heavy industrial and part ghetto in the nearby areas. No, she might be able to get special assignment to another high school, provided that the school she's trying to get into isn't overcrowded.

I live in Temple Terrace, and my son went to King. The area east of 56th St. is safe as far as living in the district, but walking to the school could be unsafe, as the immediate neighborhoods are not the greatest.

The school itself is OK, although there are better ones in the county. The IB program there is excellent if your kid is a high academic achiever.

There are a lot of African American students there. My son (who is white) never had any problems with any black students, and there were no unusual racial difficulties there at the time (2004). The surrounding neighborhoods are suburban, and not truly "ghetto" in terms of drugs, street violence and danger, but I wouldn't allow a young girl to walk alone to King.

Good luck.
