Can anyone tell me what the job market for attorneys is like in FL, and, specifically, the Tampa/St. Pete area? I am an attorney from another state who is really fed up with cold and snow. I would like to get out, but I don't know whether it's worth it to take the FL bar and move, because I don't know if I'd be able to find business. My focus has been on criminal law up to this point.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is a hiring freeze on all city and state attorney positions - the budget is a mess. I'm not too sure about the private sector. My wife graduates this spring and some of her freinds already have and are studying for the bar, so we'll see.

Scarlett u sound like me. I'm an attorney from NY/NJ and i've had enough with the northeast winters. I'm currently looking for a job in the Tampa area, but my problem is that my primary focus is real estate! I'm relying on my ligitation background and hoping that it helps. I'm actually admitted in Florida. I took the exam back in 07 because I knew I was going to move down there eventually, I just didn't know when.

Default Legal Jobs

There is nothing out there. I have been out of work for almost 3 months.. I have BS degree in legal studies and about 5 years legal experience and can not find a job. Sent out hundreds of resumes. I am going to start looking in another field so. I planned on starting law school this fall, however with both me and my husband out of work, I can not afford to do so. I would suggest not moving to the area unless you secure a job first.

I have about ten years of experience in the legal field. Started as a receptionist, then a file clerk, then a legal secretary and now a legal assistant. I have been out of work since 3/27/09. I have sent my resume everywhere, too. I just looked at the unemployment rate in Tampa compared to Fort Lauderdale/Miami (where I am originally from) and it's 10.1% in Tampa and 8.3% in Fort Lauderdale/Miami metropolitan area. It's very scary. I brought my kids up here in the summer of 08 and after 7 1/2 months later I get laid off with not one warning whatsoever nor a reprimend.

I have friends who passed the Feb. bar and are still looking for work with no leads...it is bleak. I suppose it is most places though....

Forget it. Play back old newsreels of the 1929 "Crash" which lasted 5-6 years; bread lines, etc.

Very seldom do firms hire from outside their jurisdiction. You have to move there first, then look for a job. Already tried this several times.
