I live in South Tampa and while there are some very pretentious people, there's also a wide variety of more genuine types. My block is made up of alot of the old timers who are extremely nice, some younger, newer residents, and professionals in between. After living in Tampa for 20 years, maybe you could call me a snob because you could not blast me out of here. I'll take the occassional snob if that's the price to live in what is about the most urban neighborhood in the city outside of downtown, Hyde Park or Ybor. South Dale Mabry may look somewhat suburban, but that strip has everything and it keeps getting better.

I lived in that nieghborhoods for 15 yrs, and you absolutely hit the nail on the head.
I loved the area, as far as appearance, being able to walk to Everything, but God, the people there are absolutely Horrible! No one will ever make eye contact and say Hi. I ever met any of my neighbors, very rarely got a thank you for holding the door for someone.

I recently moved to Treasure Island. Totally different type of area. The people here are So friendly and for the most part are very affluent as opposed to a bunch yuppie idiots trying to act like they are somebody when they don't have a pot to **** in.

I live in one of the poshest and most expensive South Tampa neighborhoods. Houses around me routinely sell for 1.5 million and above. Yet when I shop at Publix I wear clothes with stains and holes in them. I never go to the gym, and it shows. I am probably 50 pounds overweight. I stay out of the sun as much as possible. I could care less about night clubs. I never go near a hair salon. I think wearing clothes with "labels" is extremely shallow and tacky. I never wear any jewelry. My car is from 1998 and I plan to keep it until it dies. I say hello to everyone I know and some of the people in my neighborhood are the nicest people I've ever met. All of my close-by neighborhoods have my phone number on speed dial. All I care about is living somewhere convenient and centrally located where people maintain their properties and are friendly, educated and civilized in their behaviors.

Do I sound like a snob?

I loved South Tampa. We were considering moving there before we left the Tampa area altogether. Generally I thought the people were nice. Yeah, maybe a few snobs but I had more of a problem wihth drunk students on South Howard on weekend nights, but that just meant I avoided going to some of our favourite haunts during those times.

Part of this perception could be coming from the fact that, by law, it is illegal for non-South Tampa residents to park on the streets of South Tampa:

South Tampa's sign of the times: 5-minute parking - Tampa Bay Times

Look, they don't want you there, so why bother? There are many other bars and restaurants in the area that will actually welcome you and your dollars.

"Tampa is not friendly"
"Tampa is friendly"

It depends on what circle you're in.

"Tampa" is THE generalization..."Tampa" is a City not a Person.

& let's "define friendly"....does that mean making friends with everyone at the grocery store? having your circle of friends since high school still around? work friendly? gym friendly?(cause I can tell you right now, when I go to the gym, I go to "workout", and not "talkout"!) If someone wants to talk to me then, they can leave me a message.

Everyone at my Publix (the employees) are very friendly...but we don't hang out at barbecues together! I don't hold that against them. Nor call them "unfriendly" because of that. I see a ton of ppl on playgrounds, but we don't start socializing as if we knew each other since birth! (This is going to go right back to the other post where I expressed my dismay with ppl not making friends at work).

My experience is that generally "stay at home moms" are not very friendly...all I knew of were secluded in their own homes and wouldn't get out, and would only invite old friends over = not open to new friends.

Half of Pinellas county is crack town! (ran down)...I doubt that someone working in the blue buildings right off 275 is as friendly as someone working at the adult store a few miles down the road!

True, it is subjective. But I found it easier to make friends there than I'm finding it in Louisiana - at work or otherwise. Or in the UK for that matter. But that's just me - I'm a married professional that socialises a lot, doesn't attend church and doesn't have children. People in other walks of life might have different experiences.
