I see rats crawling across power lines every now and then. I imagine they're just trying to get from tree to tree.

Anybody remember the infamous Rat House in South Tampa? It was probably about 8-10 years ago...

Yes, I used to see lots and lots of rats near downtown, there are a lot of old run-down homes plus all the water around there. Pretty creepy seeing such large ones around. It's good to keep some cats around!

Which one was the "rat house?"

If there are rats (and Im sure there are, but not enough to be considered a problem) They are probably just citrus rats. noting a cat would have trouble keeping out of a yard.

I lived on Tampa Bay on Westshore in apts and never saw any rats and we lived there 5 years. We kept our Hobie Cat on the beach and I didn't see any sign of rats on the boat either

There are water rats according to a web search who live around canals in salt water.

Water rats could be refuring to Muskrats which are Huge. About the sive of a beaver. Ive see them a lot around. They seem to prefure ponds of lakes, not saltwater canals, but im not sure. Citrus rats are just mice who live in and feed off of citrus trees and the ol nasty gross rats your thinking about probably live in the sewers feeding of of garbage.

We used to own a 1920's bungalow in Palma Ceia. We had rats in the walls at times. Could hear the scratching and scurrying around during the night. We now own a newer home in Virginia Park and I have yet to hear or see a rat. Also - my inlaws live in Hunters Green and have had problems with rats getting in their attic so it's not just a South Tampa issue.

Lots of critters in Floridaland, but I think the "rat problem" is an exaggeration. I've lived here most of my life and don't remember anybody ever talking about it.
