Was in the hardware store on Bay to Bay today and the guy in there was telling me that South Tampa has a big rat problem; he even said "they live in the canals." Is this true? I can't imagine anyone would want to spend 500k on a house to live among rats!

I would. South Tampa is beautiful, and rats are easy to get rid of.

Rats easy to get rid of? Try telling that to a New Yorker!

Also the hardware guy said they are an epidemic and very hard to get rid of in South Tampa.

Just call in Andrew Zimmer from the Travel Channel. That guy will eat anything, even rats. I watched him eat a still beating snake heart.

Rats are pretty resourceful. They adapt to many locations and conditions.

But if you are worried, give up on South Tampa. I wouldn't. But maybe you should.

This is Tampa not New york. I had a rat problem at a house I used to live at. All you need is some rat traps and some rat poison is some stratigic spots around your house. Also, If you make sure there are no holes in which the rats can get in your house, you shouldnt have a problem. I really dont know too much about South Tampa's situation though, but im sure its not as bad as NYC

Hmm.. haven't heard that but really there aren't that many houses on canals in S. Tampa if you compare how many houses there are in S.Tampa.

Tampaguy03 lives in S. Tampa and not too far from the bay so maybe he can shed some light on this.

I have yet to see a one rat in South Tampa, (I did see one in Ybor City in an alley between buildings)....the only homes on canals in South Tampa are those along Westshore Blvd on the west side, and even there havent seen any rats when visiting friends...I highly doubt someone with 500k+ house on a canal in South Tampa has a rat problem...

My friend in Culbreath Bayou has seen rats scavenging around the canal behind Beachway.........she says rats are "a part of life" in South Tampa. Gross. I used to live in DC; that place has a severe rat problem and they have been very difficult to eradicate. Can you imagine paying 2 million plus for a home in Dupont Circle or Georgetown only to see rats on every corner?
