Within the next year or so, my young family of four are thinking of moving to St. Pete area from the Orlando area (Oviedo to be exact). Is there a strong IT presence in St. Pete or more in Tampa? Would it be reasonable to live in the St. Pete area and commute to Tampa, if there were no jobs in St. Pete?

commute across those few bridges everyday... no thanks! the traffic is miserable. if you don't mind sitting in your car half the day, go for it it's really preferable to live & work in the same county.

Oviedo is much nicer than St. Pete or Tampa. You don't want to get in the traffic on the bridges.

I travel from St. Pete to North Tampa everyday and it's really not as bad as the opposite way. You hit your traffic on the bridge but maintain 20-30mi and then once you get past I4 the traffic breaks and I can usually push 80. The travel time between Gandy and 4th to Lutz is 45mins (my bf makes the trip everyday) and to North Tampa 30mins sometimes 45mins. BUT keep in mind the trip home is not as friendly, traffic is usually much worse and takes anywhere from 1hr to 1.5hr for my bf to get home. I leave around 2 so I miss any traffic. That said you should also look for IT jobs in the clearwater, largo area I have numerous friends who work in IT up there. There are a lot of large companies based up there. Then you could live in St. Pete which is so much better than Tampa GOOD LUCK

a ton of people do it everyday.. but honestly its all relative .. If you're going into tampa and making a good living for the drive.. Of course its worth it.. Its not far, but traffic is unforgiving

I think you can most certainly find something closer to St. Pete that won't have you commuting over a bridge twice a day. The bumper to bumper traffic is very unforgiving. Then again, it all depends which part of Tampa you will be going to and from during "rush hour". If you do not use the Howard Franklin in and out of Tampa everyday, it could be okay. When I was living there, I noticed that Tampa paid a bit more for my profession (legal), but that $5K extra wasn't worth two hours or more in the car each day. There's always St. Petersburg, Largo, Seminole, and Clearwater (though Clearwater isn't a great commute to and from St. Pete, either). Good luck!

Hello-
I have read some posts about commuting from North Tampa. I am thinking about getting a job teaching in Pinellas County and might have a few schools to choose from which would give me some flexibility in distance. However, I really wanted to live in the Hyde Park/SOHO area. Is this reasonable to drive? Would I be taking the Howard Franklin or the bridge? Also, it is school so I would have to be there around 7 and probably leave around 2:30-3:00. Does this make any difference? Thanks for you help!
