We're in Tampa househunting. I'll be working at MacDill. Looking to rent a 4 bedroom/2 bath for no more than 1700. We've identified the higher performing schools for our son which are Burns in the Brandon area and Liberty in the Northern tampa/"Tampa Palms" area so we're trying to live close to those.

Which area would you live in? What is the expected commute to/from MacDill from these locations? I keep hearing about bad traffic..? Any military families out there doing the same? Thanx.

I personally think that the New Tampa area is nicer, however the drive to MacDill would be much longer from up there than it would be from Brandon. In addition to there being more distance to cover, the traffic is a lot worse. Coming from Brandon you could jump on the Crosstown and take it all the way to Gandy, and there is less traffic on the Crosstown than on the interstates. The downside to that is that the Crosstown is a toll road.

Welcome to Tampa/Brandon! The drive from Brandon is not a problem at all as long as you use the Leroy Selmon Parkway Toll Road and stay away from 8am-9am and 5pm-6pm. I do the drive every day and it is easy. It takes me anywhere from 30-45 minutes depending on my lead foot! Brandon is a great place for military personnel who want to live in a nice community with great schools and wonderful people. Let me know if you need anything else! Thanks. Randy

I have never been to Tampa Palms but I have been to Brandon. Brandon would be my next choice of place to move to when I leave Lakeland. It has just about everything you need. The mall is nearby and it is huge. From what I understand a number of military personnel live in Brandon. It isn't that far to drive to Tampa since the highways are nearby.

I live in Valrico, a suburb of Brandon. Most of my neighbors are millitary or sheriif Dept. I highly recomend Valrico over Brandon. Depending on the age of your kids, I recomend not going to Burns. We live in that area and son hated it. Totally non-responsive administrative staff. Obviously better teachers if son is on the gifted or advanced track. Burns feeds into Bloomingdale school which I also do not recomend. It is alike a prison. Just walk in and observe the feel of it. It has a rough, feel to it created by the innercity Tampa kids that are bused into it.
There is a new school Newsome HS, but pass it up. Teacher are new and less educated, it is known as a very clicky school as people who choose it do it based on appearances. Building is beautiful but very preppy feel. My daughter went to an actual prep school and this is more socially clicky! So unless you want less quality education and can dress cookie cutter designer cloths, I highly recomend Durant HS and becuase of that it's better feeder school Mullrennan Middle. Both schools have more diversity and are friendly. Randall which feels into Newsom is crazy strict, like no talking at lunch, etc. Burns is also a thuggy school due to bussed in kids. My son was afraid to use the bathroom all day for fear of the bathroom gangs. When I went to the principal they started a rpogram where youth would monitor bathroom safety. Yikes! Durant is the number one most request HS in E. Hillsborough Cty. Absolutely the best AP, Science and math teachers. All of the diverse student groups actually get along. No gangs, no fights on campus, staff extremely helpful and friendly. Both my kids loved it there. We could have gone to Bloomingdale or Newsome - noooooo.

I live in Conn. and thinking of buying a second home. I'm planning on visiting FL in 3 weeks to visit brandon, wesley chapel, carrollwood and town-n-country. Can anyone share anything with me? I have a very active social life in CT. I like jazz music,(park setting) beaches, malls, etc.
Thanks
