According to the Florida Department of Education, the top-rated high schools in Tampa from the 08-09 testing period were: 1) Newsome (Lithia), 2) Sickles (Citrus Park), and 3) Plant (South Tampa). Only Newsome and Sickles received an A-rating; Plant received a B-rating this year. You can look up every school here --> Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

Actually all of Fishhawk Ranch's schools (in Lithia) are A-rated. That's why so many families are still moving out there, and as a Realtor, I'm noticing that area is holding its value a bit better than other areas hit with decreasing home values.

I have not checked this year's rating, but last year when I moved my child from private to public high school, Riverview High School and Tampa Tech were the only "A" rated schools in the county. Riverview turned out to be a great choice, but the football team does need your son's help!

Thanks.

I wouldn't want to go to Tampa Bay Tech regardless of its "A."

Plant High School is very white collar and is known for their football. My husband and I both teach in the county.

Plant High School is in a great, upper class neighborhood with an amazing football program, state champs almost year in year out it seems in recent years. However, they did receive their first B rating a few years ago, but its consistently ranked one of the top schools in the state and does receive a lot of "A ratings."

But it is a very good school otherwise.
The best school in St. Petersburg is probably St. Pete High. Probably safest too. Other good schools in Pinellas are Palm Harbor and Countryside. I don't know about Hillsborough or
Last I heard Countryside was a D rated school that's why they tried to make a grab for Palm Harbor's IB Program. I would stay away from Countryside!

That would be incorrect. It's a "B" rated school. It has a long tradition of strong academics with a much more varied demographic than either Palm Harbor University or East Lake High School. IMO Countryside would be a better experience than the hyper-competitive environment of the other two. A student who is driven academically is going to succeed in an "A" or "B" school and it's kind of ridiculous to suggest otherwise.
