You guys looked way too far into what I said. I was being general. When I said "law against homeless" I meant more like a city ordinance... something along the lines of jaywalking, except enforced; a legal reason to get homeless people off the streets. Someone mentioned there was already something like that in effect, but police officers look the other way on, which probably makes sense in a lot of scenarios. Either way, most of you guys are angry, bitter jackasses, and it is disappointing and discouraging trying to make civil discussion. To end my thoughts about this thread I will just say that what happened was a tragedy, and I hope that it stimulates the folks in charge to come up with more ways to prevent pointless murder from happening.

I agree TILI, you shouldn't walk around at 3am, especially in bad areas. However colleges are known to cover up and downplay safety concens.
SIAN, Do you have any evidence that UT downplayed the safety concerns that go along with being on the street at 3am? Or is this just some random accusation? I went to USF and they most certainly did NOT downplay safety issues. Some would say that they actually went a bit overboard on that front. They were definitely pro-active about safety. Not that it matters really. If a college student doesn't know better than to walk the streets while intoxicated in the middle of the night, nothing the college could say would have prevented this. This young man wasn't fresh off the turnip truck either, he was a senior. It is very common (maybe even universal) for young adults to beleive that they are invulnerable, and it takes events like this to wake them up. I am sorry for the student's family, but these things happen, especially when you don't take responsibility for your own safety.

Just because you send a kid off to college(especially these days) doesn't make them instantly street smart and savy.
You don't think today's kids are street smart??? I dunno what kids you have been meeting, but the ones I know are extremely sharp and almost always mature beyond their years.

21 is the new 14 these days.
Funny. I would have written that sentence in the opposite direction.

I'm not even close to a gun nutt, However, When you have gun control and you take guns away from your average jane and joe, The only people that will have access to them are criminals and government employees.

No thanks.

FYI, I've lived in Texas and most people I knew carried at all times, People think twice about putting a gun on someone there because they never know who's packin.

I went to Blake High School near the UT campus for a semester one year, I wouldn't walk North Blvd. at 3-4pm, let alone 3-4am.

My example was very rough. I did not mean that we should lock up all homeless people, but a solution is needed.
Well, what have YOU done to 'help' the 'Homeless' you have such a problem with?
