Its sad I use to live there and have been thinking about a move back but the more i think about it maybe i should stay in Kansas where I am or head to the West Coast.

Yeah, our taxes went down about $600, and the year before they went down a few hundred also. Our taxes are under $2,000 now, and that seems pretty dang reasonable to me considering we live two blocks from Sarasota Bay. I'm pretty happy.

Its true, the TCO, (Total Cost of Ownership) of living in Florida has steadily been creeping upward for some time now. Taxes , Insurance (car and home), utilities, Fuel (florida is higher then most states on gas prices at the pump) and so on are milking the homeowners big time. stevecybo, true, the taxes are slated to decrease this year, but did you realize that Hillsborough county and others are contemplating raising the base millage rates next year? Its expected to be in the neighborhood of 3k for every 100k in value. (this was in the news a month or so ago as a way to make up the local deficit) Now factor in large percentage of the population who dont pay property tax , those living in mobile homes and apartments, and the burden must be born by the homeowners (true apartment owners pay property tax but only for the building, not proportionately scaled to the number of families living there). Add this all to the predominately low wages in the area and its a downward spiraling vortex. Those who can are moving. Those who cant are left footing the bill.
Unfortunately, since "no state income" tax is written into the state's constitution, the only way to pay for things is via property tax or sales tax. It's just a no win for the working class.

We're moving out of state but not because of taxes. It's mainly because the declining education system.

My property taxes have gone down. My insurance costs have gone done. From what I hear, Florida's educational system has had a major upswing...the reality here in Tampa Bay is schools vary from Exceptional to Scary...I have no kids in the school system. People here whine about taxes, but they seem to forget we have no state income tax here in FLA. Florida will continue to be attractive to many in the future. Talk to people coming here via corporate relocations. Talk to retiring baby boomers with significant wealth. My utility costs are half what they were up N, my property taxes are less than half what they were up N. Not such a bad gig here in FLA.

Not sure what the agenda is of the writer of this article. His premise is that people are leaving Florida because taxes are too high. Then he concludes the article by knocking the fact that Florida does not have a state income tax. Typical garbage put out by Time magazine.

You can add to that, the numbers they used for net migration are from the U of F study that bases the numbers on electric company connections and disconnections, supplemented by building permit data, to estimate population changes.
This same report overestimated population by 500,000 in 2007.
I guess you use the report that supports your story though.
Oh, and my taxes went down 15% on my home and 25% overall.
