Do you find that there are a lot of people with Southern accents in this area? Or is it mostly transplants?

I was *shocked* to hear people from Plant City sounding just like me...a native of North Carolina! Southern accents really are around in some of the smaller, rural areas of Central Florida.

Depends. Several years ago, I met a woman with a HEAVY southern accent (think southern GA/northern FL) - only to find out she was born in St. Petersburg, and lived here her entire life.

Most southern accents are in the more rural areas (within proximity to Tampa Bay), though.

I agree.. the majority of ppl are transplants. In 30 years of living in Tampa I met less than 20 ppl who were natives and I worked in a bank for several years.

^^^ It's unfortunate that there arent more natives like myself left in FL. All the transplants have changed the landscape, the feel (not so laid back anymore), and the southern-ness/friendliness many of us enjoyed. Anyhow, that's a whole different conversation...

Where are you now Keeper? You have moved? The end of the Appalachian mountains?

IN Tampa? I'm going to guess that's unlikely. Like others have said, you need to go to more rural areas. Try Plant City, and the like.

Definatly someone from Plant City or anything north of Hillsborough County. There is actually a huge percentage of people in North Florida that have a heavy southern accent. Try small places such as Madison, Live Oak, Lake City, Branford, Jasper, White Springs, and all of those surrounding areas, even in Tallahassee.
