My husband will be working at MACDILL AFB, we are looking for a nice neighborhood and high school with a great academic features. What area would you suggest? we have honor students and would like to keep up the same level of education for them as well as a great neighborhood to grow up in.

Macdill is near South Tampa which has beautiful neighborhoods but pretty expensive. Across the gandy bridge is St. Petersburg which is not quite as nice but more reasonably priced.

I'm sorry to tell you that the education system here is horrible. The Bay area is notorious for it. I myself went through it when it was bad, now it is awful. The teachers are paid very poorly so no one wants to be one and for some reason the teachers here enjoy sleeping with their students more so than anywhere else. I'm not talking one or two cases but much more than you would expect that to occur.

Sorry I forgot to say, check out Magnet schools in Hillsborough county. They are basically exceptional education schools that you need to apply for, bit higher standards there.

A lot of the teacher/student problems were going on before, just gets out more now.
Child abuse is not new, but people accept it goes on and it's talked about now, good thing too I would say. Magnet schools are good, but some regular schools are pretty decent too, East Lake/Palm Harbor Traditional/ Seminole was good, but slipped of late I feel. St Pete High/Palm Harbor have IB programs. SPHS would be best for McDill. St Pete is IMO as nice as South Tampa, much more of a city feel to it, a real downtown that South Tampa doesn't have. Lots of theatre/outdoorconcerts/waterfront/market/galleries, all clustered around the main downtown and harbor. If you can afford to rent/buy here, and I just found a 3/2 in a nicer part of the old NE for just $189K! then you will certainly like it.
