I would check into U-haul, they advertise in town moves for $19.95 + mileage. They rent vans and small pick up trucks with AC, not exactly luxury but it would suffice. It would be kind of fibbing in a way but I'd like a truck to move some stuff around (namely yourself) for a week is what I'd tell them.

I have a similiar sort of dilema when I fly into St. Pete/Clwr. and have to get to Citrus County a 100 miles north. Car rental/ Cab fare and Airport Limo service is way to expensive and Greyhound is still $30 and a bunch of hassle, next time I'm renting a Uhaul.

Rentalcarmomma.com offers discount codes for different agencies. Use google and try getting quotes through different websites-I once had 3 different price quotes from Enterprise-the lowest saving me almost $100 over the other quoted prices. Alamo.com offers last minutes savings, but being near Christmas, you might not want to chance it. Good luck.

If you have a Costco Membership you can get really good discounts booking through the Costco website under their travel section. You book directly with the rental companies but you get a costco club member discount and can also use any advertised coupons in conjunction with the discount. There are coupons right on the costco travel website. That is the route we go when we fly into Tampa.

Are you and your family visiting friends/family in Clearwater? If so, if they have a spare car they could just put you on the insurance for the week. That is what we do when we have guests; we just take them to our agent, put them on for the time they're here and it is very cheap.

XLABEL: What a great idea... U-Haul - makes sense.

Also, I've been really lucky on Priceline lately; maybe I missed reading whether or not you tried that.

Welcome daylillie!
That amount does sound way too high for me. Have you checked Enterprise?
If not , I can check on the phonebook for you , on one of those places that rent cars that are not the biggest ones, so you can check to see how much it will be. That amount just seems unbelievable to me...

Check also the "Dollar" comp. I am not sure of the exact name, but I always find great prices with them. They have the both, right in the airport.

Check out EZ rent a car. They have a shuttle that will take you to their location from the airport for free (its only about a mile from the airport) I rented from them when I visted before I moved to Clearwater. Thier rates were much lower than any of the on-site airport locations. So maybe check thier website for a quote! www.e-zrentacar.com or thier phone number is (813) 287-9787
Good luck!
