The toads are brown and about twice the size of an average toad. They were originally brought to Florida by sugar cane farmers to eat bugs. Now they're breeding near ponds.

Vernon Yates, director of Wildlife and Rescue Rehabilitation, says the toads can be dangerous to pets, so it's a good to idea for people to protect their skin when handling one.

"Right behind the eyes there's a gland that secretes a white, milky substance, but the toad has to get upset before that happens," Yates said.

Cane toads don't like colder weather. They tend to burrow this time of year.

"They should be cautious," Yates said. "But does anyone have to live in fear? Absolutely not."

They are big and pretty much fearless. We had those in Panama and if a dog bites at them even putting their mouth on them the dog will start foaming (a lot) at the mouth. You do have to be careful if you have a small dog as it can kill them or make them very sick.

They also poop on the concrete the size of a small dog or cat. My DH thought the calling cards were from our cat..
