The reason they say North or South is that the streets are 38th ave N. or 38th Ave S. all most all streets end in north, south, north east, South east ect... hope that helps
I loved living in Shore Acres that were we raised our kids. that is in the north east.

There are a lot of crummy looking areas in the northside too. Little old dated cinderblock shacks that look like sheds next to shanties in rambles built in the 50's with no theme or style and the same poor people that certain people mention live in the 5 Ave S to 54th Ave south area only these are whites.
The thing is all the grand old homes or homes with style and big trees, brick streets are on the south side in more abundance. I tell you drive across 38th Ave N or the area across from the Target at Park & Tyrone (Alt 19/Baypines) and check out the poverty and crime. Look at Haines Rd and lealmen bordering St. PEtersburg as well as the pitiful Kenneth City and the sheds people live in with cars on blocks and weeds taller then the living room windows.
These areas are dirty and worn out not just the southside.

i would definitely recommend the feather sound area, upscale, close to everything...very very nice. kind of right in the middle of north st. pete, clearwater and tampa. close to the water, beautiful views, very upscale and reasonable re: price.

I would agree with LoganFL generally as far as the south side goes, but you'll really need to check it out for yourself. Unfortunately there are pockets of areas that are less desirable (the recent drop in property values hasn't helped one bit), and they do tend to be clustered around the southside, although the northside has it's share as well.

Other than that, it mainly depends on where you will be commuting to/from. Certainly if you will be going to Tampa or Clearwater on a regular basis, you should stick with areas further north and east. And don't believe anyone who tells you the only nice places are right by the water.

Bottom line, St. Petersburg proper isn't that big, so it shouldn't be very hard to get a feel for the city once you're here, and navigation is super-easy because of the north/south and east/west road configuration.

Good luck

ABSOLUTELY, check out the feather sound area!! crystal bay condos are very very nice. you can rentals there at a VERY good price...and the rent includes water, sewage, trash AND CABLE. all you would pay is electric. they are called crystal bay at feather sound. actually ANYWHERE in feather sound is VERY VERY nice and very reasonable and the location can't be beat.
