I've just been informed by State Farm that we will probably be dropped. Because we are in the 34608 area code, we were told the only company writing policies now is Citizens. Can anyone give me an idea of what our annual cost may be with Citizens? We have had one previous claim for a sinkhole with State Farm (repaired in 2009). Our current policy is $2400 per year.

Sometimes a company called Royal Palm or something like that opens "their books" to Spring Hill and since we are out of hurricane season you may have luck. You have to go through an Allstate agent though.

If I were you, I'd call AAA in New Port Richey at 727-375-2404. They're approved to write Citizen's policies. Good luck!

P.S. My State Farm agent in Tampa said they can also write Citizen's policies. Do you think State Farm is dropping you because of the claim?

Someone gave the advice to contact AAA. Good idea. I get my auto insurance though them. Nobody is cheaper. There are a few companies writing in high risk areas. For that, ask Citizens who those company's are.

A prior sinkhole claim should'nt bother new rates because generally a fixed sinkhole home is better off than a home that hasn't had one yet. The ground under a sinkhole home is very stable. A home that hasn't had one yet is more at risk.

With Citizens in 34606 we pay $1,980, with sinkhole coverage.
Without it we'd be looking at about $900.00 a year. We also have Class A windstorm protection and an alarm system which generates about
$700 a year in discounts.

They say they are dropping and/or raising rates because we are in such a volatile area and that if they continue carrying their current policies they will not survive.

If State Farm, or any insurance company for that matter, doesn't want to take the risk then they should leave the state. The insurance companies should not be able to pick and choose between certainly low risk areas and high risk areas. Its not that Pasco/Herrnando is falling into the earth, hurricanes aren't batterring us 3 or 4 times a year. However, the insurance companies don't want to risk the profits. PLUS they get a raise in the rates from ALL policy holders regardless of the risk they assume on that property. Hot stuff. Get out of the State you bums!

I agree and wish it were different.

I just bought a condo in Pasco County and am looking for homeowners insurance. I have heard a lot of horror stories about trying to buy insurance. Who should I go to? Someone said Citizens. Where are they and what is their entire name and phone number?

Condo should be different. Your Board should insure the building. You just need a contents/rebuild policy I would think.
