MacDill Air Force Base is in South Tampa(Home to Central Command, huge presence). Most people respect the military personnel from what I have sensed, it is great for the community.

Is Tampa somewhat of a 'military town'.

I mean, akin to say, San Diego?

Another city with a ton of other things going on for it, but 'military' and San Diego is a part of it as well.

This thread is over four years old. I'm sure the OP has since left MacDill.

It doesn't really have the same feel as many of the other military cities. Since MacDill his the headquarters SOCUM, you have a lot of brass and their support personnel along w/ a civilian sector of support.

There aren't a lot of low ranked military in the area like San Diego or other military installations.

I find that the military are well respected in this area over the years. The professional teams (Bucs, Rays, Bolts) do a good job of making the military feel welcomed.

Since Florida is a retirement state, a lot of military retire here. MacDill doesn't have a hospital, but the commissary is heavily used as well as the post exchange. You usually see more retirees in those facility than military members.

Northern Tampa? Where specifically?

And no, you cant compare Tampa to a city like San Diego in terms of military percentage, in fact it's quite low. MacDill has never been a huge employer compared to cities like Jacksonville, Norfolk, San Diego, Portsmouth, even Columbia, SC.

eventhough this is super old, it isnt a military town at all. Its really not THAT big of a base, the biggest presence is in apartments around the south tampa area.
