TALLAHASSEE (AP) -- State regulators have rejected Progress Energy Florida's request for a $500 million-a-year base rate increase.

The Public Service Commission's staff had recommended only a $48 million increase, but the panel trimmed that figure to zero Monday.

The company serves more than 1.6 million homes, businesses and other customers in central and north Florida.

It's the first major decision for the five-member panel's two newest commissioners.

Both were appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist who has opposed rate increases for Progress and Florida Power & Light Co.

The commission will consider FPL's $1 billion request Wednesday.

The panel's staff has recommended a $357 million increase in that case.

Finally! Someone on that panel grew a pair!
We have had what, 4 rate hikes within a 12-14 month period?

Thank God!

Looks like one of the very few things Crist has done right; appointed some people that stick with their ideals and are for the people for a change... I pay enough for electric service. In this lousy economy, they want to jack up rates to make the fat cats fatter, and make the struggling people struggle harder? That was a no-brainer. Awesome.

Just wait until they threaten to stop covering Florida... Then your rates will triple. Anyone with home owners insurance care to chime in?

I'm sure others would jump at the opportunity to provide service here, if it were a truly free, open market...but then again, it's not.
I wouldn't mind a coop like Withlacoochie.

I just seem to remember all the home owners insurance companies threatening to leave Florida when the government tried to put a cap on it.

Speaking of electric companies, I'm relocating to Tampa from south Florida. Why is it that Tampa Electric is so much more expensive than FP&L?
