I am considering a move to The Tampa/St. Pete area.
Can someone tell me what the state of music is in the public schools there?....more specifically, do students rent band and orchestra instruments for use in the school music programs, and are those music programs strong?

Also, I play music on the side as a keyboardist/pianist.
What is the live music scene like there?
Are there good paying gigs for live musicians? I play 60s,70s,80s, and jazz standards.

Thanks
BR

As far as the live music scene, there is plenty of it in the bay area. check out local rags like creative loafing, tbt, friday extra.

here a two good sites depicting the local music scene, artisits, venues, etc.:
Soundcheck | Tampa Bands, Tampa Concerts, Music and More (http://blogs.tampabay.com/tbt/Artists/ - broken link)

Band policy probably varies depending on the school system (school systems are county-wide). At the middle school a friend's son attends, instruments are rented for a one-time fee, and kids who play larger ones (like tuba and bassoon) are issued an extra instrument to keep at home for practice.

Do you know which music stores rent instruments and work closely with the directors and school?

Tampa's core scene is known for metal. Yes, other genres exist, metal is still king here.
