Mine went from $100.00 to $258.00... ouch. It is cheaper to cool the house than to heat it...

Yes, most reverse air units are probably more efficient cooling than heating. I put a new unit in when I bought this place. Looks like my highest bill so far was $168 in August which was a very hot month this year. The more typical summer bill was probably Sept's which came in at $135. Jan's bill was $128 but that only runs through the 13th. Will be hard for me to judge what that very cold spell did to my bill because I think it gets split between two bills and I'm away from the house now, which will average the total month down.

We paid $ 162.- more than we do in the Summer, but neighbors paid $ 350.-...but they were walking in t-shirts inside until their bill came and they changed to wearing sweaters ...even the family that stayed there for X-Mas opened the windows because it was too hot inside...all being told by the neighbor him self, who was totally shocked how expensive heating your home is...

My bill went up from about $55 to $89. Last year, it only went up to $76.

The only time I've ever spent more than $100 was last summer, but only because I fell behind with one of my payments. In general, I'm not AC crazy. In fact, the only time I use it heavily is during the winter to warm my apartment up. I bought a fan to cool me off when it gets warm, and it's been serving its purpose wonderfully. Saves me about twenty-five dollars in cooling costs each month.

I can't wait to see my bill. We just moved here in the last couple months from Indiana and we didn't turn on the heat once during this "cold spell" hehehe I'm sure I'll bite my tongue if this ever happens again once I've adjusted.

if you think about it, cooling the house has a smaller gap of temperature between outdoor (say 95) and indoor (say 78) ie less than 20 degrees. Now to heat from outside of say 40 to inside of 78, well you can see the reason why...

if you heat your house to 78 you will DEF get a very high bill; when i lived in VA if i turned the heat above 65 degrees i was asking for trouble. you gotta put on socks and sweaters. and keep the heat at 66 or lower. heating to 78 degrees in winter is a recipe for a very high bill.

the "cold snap" was cold even for me, a VA native. i tried to keep the heat off but it got to be 54 degrees in my house. i put the heat on at 68. and i have electric heat (central A/C) like most Floridians

i would be happy if it was 68 degrees year-round, no lower OR HIGHER. but i can't afford La Jolla, CA!

We kept it around 68 degrees. Our bill wasn't outrageous. We wore warm clothes and then bundled up under the covers at night.

We did not turn on any central heat during the cold - our little house stayed in the 60s on it's own, and we used those small space heaters when we needed a little supplemental heat. I just got my bill - $35.00 - yes, you read that right $35.00. It was actually $70.00, but FPL gave everyone a fuel credit for January. Pretty awesome!
