I might be moving to Tampa soon for my job. I've never been though, and don't know much about the area. I'm looking for some advice on areas to look into for living. I like the city life -- walkable neighborhoods, good restaurants/bars right around the corner, etc. I guess ideally I'd like to keep rent under 800 a month. I certainly don't need the nicest place in the world, but I don't want to live in some tiny, crappy apartment. That said, can anyone give me some advice for areas I should look into?

For what you request in your post., in Tampa you will want to concentrate on the neighborhoods in South Tampa(especially neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Davis Islands, Bayshore Gardens, Palma Ceia, Bayshore Beautiful, Oscawanna/Courier Park), South Tampa is the peninsula of land that is south of Kennedy Blvd, with Westshore Blvd/Tampa Bay on the west, and Bayshore Blvd/Hillsborough Bay on the east. For a more artsy/gritty feeling neighborhood, check out Ybor City.

Remember to look online and craigslist for private condo/townhome rentals; also just walking or driving up and down the streets you may find 'for rent' signs in smaller/older apartment buildings throughout the neighborhoods. A buddy of mine got a nice 950 sq foot 1 bedroom apartment just one block from Howard Avenue(SOHO area) for $800/mo., just from walking around and seeing a sign in the window of the building. It shares a great courtyard with 5 other apartments in the building.

you'll want to look at hyde park and palma ceia. unfortunately 800 a month could be wishful thinking for a nice place in these areas.

Thanks for the responses.

I've been looking around quite a bit today, and it's looking more and more like Hyde Park is where I'd want to be. I've heard some not so good things about the traffic in Tampa though. Where I'd be working is just south of the airport (looks like the 275 and Memorial Highway area). What kind of commute could I expect from Hyde Park to there, and vice versa, for a typical 8-5 job?

traffic will suck of course, but you wont have to travel far. maybe 5 miles. you could take kennedy over to one of the roads that run N/S like Dale Mabry, Lois, Westshore. It may take you 15-20 mins to get 5 miles, but that is better then the crazies that live up in North Tampa and travel downtown to work!

Also, there is a thread similar to this started today by UCFgrad, I would hit the back button and check his thread out, as I have provided some questions and insight that I dont feel like retyping

You sure about that, just 5 miles? I looked on Mapquest earlier and thought that it said somewhere between 10-15 miles (can't recall the exact distance). I don't mind a decent commute, like 30 minutes or so, but I don't want to do anything more than that.

hyde park to the area of the airport is at most 5 miles. i guess i don't know exactly where you will be working. The gym I work out at is in hyde park and i can see the airport from the balcony where I live. I would say my drive is ten minutes, 15 tops each way
