The Airport/Westshore area is mostly chains(and some very good ones, walking distance from your hotel like Lee Roy Selmons and Kona Grill) due to it being and Airport and Business District.
Some of my recs in that area for non chains include Arco Iris and La Teresita on Columbus Ave east of Himes Ave for authentic Cuban/Spanish.
Tampa's best Korean in Sa Ri One on Cypress Ave east of Lois Ave.

Drive a few miles towards downtown and South Tampa, neighborhoods like Hyde Park/SoHo have lots of great non chain offerings.(South Howard Avenue/Platt Street/Kennedy Blvd)

Where do you live, i.e. hometown? That will help narrow down quite a few places...

Ok... well, I was going to recommend Honeys in Carrollwood, not all that far from the airport... its mainly Western NY food,... Beef on Weck, Wings, Fish Fry, etc... low priced and excellent.

I can see the bright red hilton sign from my bedroom. it glares through my window at night. I live in that yellow complex with a brown roof right behind the hilton near the tennis courts.

anyhow, I know that area pretty well. Definately check out Kona Grill, LeeRoy Selmons, or walk over to the international plaza and check out Capital Grill, the grape (light fare and wine), Bar Louie, Gallary Bistro, Brio Tuscan Grill. All of these places are great, but they are chains, but not massive chains. anywhere from 3 to 20 resturants around the country. You can also check out Ocean Prime, but it will cost you a some $$$.

Cuban food is not like Mexican food, not hot or spicy. Try chicken and yellow rice, roast pork (baked with onions usually) or pollo asada which is nothing more than chicken breast cut up with potatoes cooked. Really good food that is very reasonable.

Lee Roy Selmons is good country type cooking. There porkchops are HUGE

I would suggest the Colonade for grouper. It is on Bayshore not too far away but you will need a car to get there.

honestly, IMO the best food in tampa, and a GREAT place to have a birthday is ceviche in south tampa. It is about 4 miles from your hotel.

Ceviche
