My husband and I are thinking of leaving Chicago and moving to the Tampa area. The thought of another winter here is enough to make anyone run! We spend quite a bit of time in Florida (visit at least six times a year) and dream of living there. Well, life is short and we all have only one chance to realize our dreams......We are thinking of taking the plunge...selling our house....buying a home in Tampa... and hopefully, finding jobs.

I am a teacher. I love what I do! I definitely want to find employment in the same field. I am open to working in either the public or private sector, as I already have experience in both. I've worked in two of the best schools in Illinois and would be going to Tampa with a wealth of experience (gifted education, arts integration, data driven instruction, Masters Degree in Educational Leadership, K-9 certification, etc.)but.....are there any jobs? I know at one time Florida had many teaching positions open but I'm concerned as to whether or not there are still openings.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated,
Dreaming of Nice Weather and a Slower Pace of Life

Tampa is a nice area for families. I work for Hillsborough County school district and can say that getting a job may pose a bit of a challenge depending on your areas of certification. We continue to seek math, Special Education, and science teachers. Elementary Ed is not in demand now. Also look into Pasco County Public schools and Pinellas County Public Schools. I am not quite familiar with the private schools. If you are looking for a slower pace this is the place for you. Hope I offered some insights. Good Luck

I think highly qualified teachers are in demand everywhere so contact Pinellas and Hillsborough school boards. There are tons of private schools here from pretty large and well known to smaller ones, relig.non relig/montessori etc, so you are sure to find something with your talents. You will get the weather, not so sure about slower pace of life, I think teaching is now a more pressurized job than ever it was.

I can't really help you with inside information, but I can give you links to the local public school district websites for further research. It's not much, but it's a start. Good luck! Pinellas County Schools - Job Openings (http://www.pinellas.k12.fl.us/HR/jobs.html - broken link) and Hillsborough County Schools - Job Openings, and Pasco County Schools - Job Openings.
