So we went down to take a look at purchasing homes and after some thinking we have decided to go with renting for the first year and see how things pan out.

We still want to be in the Tampa area or suburbs (within 30 minute drive to Tampa). Looking at a 2br apt/condo preferably in a better area since we have a child with nice school (elementary) for around $1000/mo

Anyone have recommendations? We found hundreds of apt. communities but don't know what areas to look into.

Thanks,
Eric

My best advice is to decide which school you want for your child, as education is one of the most important criteria for a family, then find a rental in that location and look for a home in same area.
There are more than one area in Tampa with decent schools, you can even consider Pinellas, if you dont mind a slightly longer drive, and want beaches for the family.

How are the schools in the St. Pete area?

There are good and bad schools in both areas.

Sorry I don't recall but are you wanting 30 minutes to downtown Tampa? That is going to limit your area. You are going to have stay pretty close to Tampa for a 30 min commute.

Check out Riverview, Brandon, S. Tampa, Seminole Heights.

Check out greatschools.net for schools in the area.
