I've been looking for a good char grilled hamburger in Tampa for a while now and so far the effort has been fruitless, er, meatless.

Is the only place to get one my backyard? I just hate setting up the grill and doing the whole deal for a couple of hamburgers.

Hungry man.

I don't know of any restaurants that use charcoal. Have you tried Beef O Bradys or Chili's?

Okay, I'm looking for a place that features hamburgers that taste like they were cooked outdoors on a charcoal grill, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

By the way, Bern's uses charcoal. I'm sure there are others.

I don't know about chargrilled burgers but El Cap in St. Pete has good burgers and so does Ted Peders in Pasadena.

I didn't go to Bern's for a hamburger. But I have been there enough times to know that they welcome people ordering "off menu."

For example, they don't feature baked stuffed lobster. But you can order it. When I order mine I rusually equest it be stuffed with oysters, shrimp and seasoned bread crumbs. mmmmmmmmm. It's very nice.

I'm sure if I requested a hamburger there, I would receive one. They may in fact offer them there. I have never asked for one, so I'm not sure.

I have often had their wonderful steak sandwich while sitting at the bar talking to Kenny or one of the other bartenders. Steak sandwiches are not on the menu but they are readily available at Bern's, so hamburgers may be available too.

I'll head there tomorrow evening and let you know.

Have you ever been there?

Have you tried the Biff Burger on 49th Street North in St. Pete? That's a great burger in a great atmosphere. I recommend it to everyone.

Yes, I've lived in this area for 25+ years. I've eaten at Bern's many times, but I never ordered a hamburger - lol!

As I said, I've never requested a hamburger there either. But I will, trust me.

I too have been there "many" times. Enough that my wife and I have our favorite waiter(s). When we call for reservations, we rotate our list of whom to ask for.

Let's see, there's Karen, but I think she's down to two nights a week these days, then of course there's Drew The Impecccable, Brash Houston and a couple of others (my wife keeps track of the list).

If we're feeling spontaneous, we just walk in without reservtions and get seated even if it's "prime time" on a Saturday evening during snow bird season and they are booked solid.

David always keeps a couple of tables open for favored customers just like his father did.

I will be having a hamburger at the bar tomorrow evening around 8 p.m. Care to join me? I'll be the guy eating freshly ground steak tips on a roll.

lol!
