I moved out here 16 years ago from California, and I have been sick a lot down here. Keep in mind, there is a highly transient population down here, too. So in addition to mold issues, you have to contend with two distinct sick months:
1) October to December- when the snowbirds from up north come down, they bring a lot of illnesses that are indigenous to their climates. Flu, stomach viruses, etc. Plus, the kids are back in school and always picking up the crud from other kids.
2) March-April- the pollen is pretty bad during these times, and with the upper respiratory irritations come the sore throats, coughs, and sinus infections.

My own update. I was wrong all along. I still have bronchitis after a month of visiting Tampa, probably chronic at this point

I think it's the pollen that got me sick. I suffer from allergies but up to this point they had never escalated to bronchitis. Tampa is known as one of the worst cities for pollen allergies.

Sorry about the bronchitis Princ3ss! Not a good thing.

My update: My dh has decided he wants to clean things up himself rather than have the guy come back out. He looked at the drain pan in the attic and I guess it's pretty nasty. I hope that's where it's coming from and he can clean it up easily and well. He's planning on doing it this weekend.

In the meantime, I can't run the air anymore. I tried last night and this morning my lungs feel like they are full of cotton and every breath hurts. I have lung issues anyway and this is apparently really aggravating it. I really hope he can clean it up and we don't have to look any further.

Well, if anyone is interested, here's some more bad news.....

Apparently the drip pan, etc was cleaned when I wasn't looking, by the original guy. I called an EPA certified company, after doing a little research, and apparently my cotton and knife- filled lungs are probably caused by the chemical that was sprayed into the ducts. The worst news is that it's possible that it can not be cleaned out

Someone's coming to give us an estimate if I can get the landlord to OK it.

Oh No! I'm sorry to hear about your recent problem. I wonder if opening all your windows/doors and turning the fan on full blast would help air the chemical out of those ducts? Maybe go outside for a few hours for some backyard relaxation or something while the house/ducts air out?

Thanks! I'm not sure if that would work or not. I've been trying to decide if I should do it. I was warned by an HVAC guy that it may not be a good idea, but he didn't know for certain. I guess it could be bad if the first guy sprayed it in the wrong spot.

I'm hoping to get someone out here Monday to tell me exactly what's wrong and what needs to be done. No one will do anything without the LL's permission and I'm not certain he's going to give it.

Have I mentioned how much I am not enjoying renting?

Your LL won't fix the AC?

Wow, I just wrote a big long post out and somehow lost it.

Instead of doing that all again, the short of it is, I don't know.

Everything that has been done so far has come out of our pocket. We are hoping he will let us take it off the rent, but I'm not sure. He also has not given approval for the company to come out and give a *free* estimate on what needs to be done. They won't do anything, including look, without the homeowner's OK.

I wouldn't pay a dime, this is the LL's responsibility. Does he want you to pay his home owners insurance too?

Has anyone else had this happen after coming to this area? Honestly I was hoping for less illness in a warmer climate!
Hi Maggi07,

I am a native floridian and have been sick since January same house for 6 years. Also, had the stomach issue and upper respiratory problems. I have had two rounds of anti biotics, still feel like yuk. Now taking allergy medicine every day. My doctor was even deathly ill. Don't know what's up. Good luck.
