I've been told by everyone that palm river is a terrible place, but after looking at certain neighborhoods at all different times of day it seems to be very quiet and peaceful. I found a few houses right of palm river road for 60 - 80K which are quite large and come with .5 acres to 2 acres of land. Not to mention that its right off the crosstown and 5 minutes to downtown, channelside, ybor, and about 10 minutes to hyde park. I don't know if the area has just retained the bad name, or if certain neighborhoods are really bad and cause the entire area to be looked upon in a poor light.

From what I've seen it is a really rural setting, farms, roosters, lots of land, lots of trees and wildlife. There are some rundown older homes but with an abundance of land, which is very suprising as it is only a few miles from downtown. I know the area over by 78th st is pretty bad (clair-mel), but what about the area around 50th st, and palm river road.

Please don't just respond with the tamponian answer, because I already know the area has a bad name.

I wouldn't buy there...but that is just me. The area does have "history" but new construction in the surrounding areas may be improving the negatives...the realtors here can shed more light on what they know as an investment, but don't just jump in without more investigations. How far off Hwy60? I can't imagine where you have that much empty space close to HWY 60?

A very successful colleague of mine with CWB has lived in a house on the canal at Palm River Rd and 57th over 25 years. Yes, part of the area is known for crime, but there are some nice homes and neighborhoods in other parts. Hillsborough County Affordable Housing funded a couple of communities in the most blighted of the area. I helped build a Habitat house on Maydell. If you're looking to buy waterfront property, the mangroves out to McKay Bay are protected. You should probably check into the cost of homeowner's insurance (or make your offer contingent upon a reasonable $$ amount). And use caution with the older all frame homes due to wood rot, mold, termites, etc.

Good to know there are some areas around PalmRiver that have a positive potential! Good input TampaKaren. I need to get out more in that area.
