Young Professionals looking to rent somewhere between St. Pete and Lakeland! (Brandon: apartments, neighborhood)

We are 2 young professionals, one works in Lakeland and one works in Downtown St. Pete. We have been living in St. Pete but the drive to Lakeland is just too long, so now we are looking for a middle ground.

We went looking in Brandon yesterday, and found some decent apartments, but nothing wow'd us. We want to stay around $1000 - $1300 at the most and we definitely need a 2 bedroom. I like to Jog, so I would like to be in an area that I feel safe in.

Ideally, I LOVE the West Park Village neighborhood feel in Westchase, but that location just does not work for us. I also LOVE Harbour Island and Davis Island, but doesnt really look like we can afford that either. I'd love to be able to walk to places, but might not be do-able. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You might be surprised with Davis Island. Check out some of the apartment buildings on the north end of the island...the area from the hospital to where the main road forks. There are lots of 1950s and 1960s-era buildings that, while they might not be anything to look at, might have some good deals.
