Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and looking for advice/opinions. I am currently a SAHM and am thinking of (maybe) training to be a preschool teacher/aide. However, I am 40 and am wondering if I am too old? Also, if there are any here, I'd like to hear from people who work in preschool who are introverted. How do you handle it? Is it a good/bad fit for you?

You are not too old at all. There is a gentleness and patience that older aides bring to pre-school that some children desperately need.

That is not considered old at all. There is a shortage of good preschool teachers who are reliable.

(Sarcasm on) Yes, you're too old. You probably don't even remember what it's like to be a preschooler. (Sarcasm off)

The question is do you like working with preschoolers not your age.

Well that's good to know. I've been grappling with trying to figure out if my personality is suited to this line of work. It is and it isn't. I love babies, tots & little kids. I am VERY intuitive, empathic, quiet, gentle and childlike. I have a passion for special needs, autism, highly sensitive and introverted kids in particular. (Because I was one such kid myself)

Areas of concern is how draining it is for an introverted personality, how physically taxing on the body (bad back) and dealing with horrible parents. As I would be wanting to work part-time I think would be able to manage. I want to do something meaningful. Those that are familiar with Myers Briggs personality types, I am INFP.

AH! One more question, is it mandatory to have the flu jab if you work in a preschool?

If you are an aide you don't have to deal with the parents - the teacher does. Why don't you try out being an aide for a year before deciding if you want to do the teacher thing? I have a few friends, most of which saw 40 a long time ago, who are preschool aides at private preschools that only meet two or two days a week and they love, love, love it.

One of the girls I grew up with trained, first as an aide, than later got a degree for a full teachers certificate, starting at age 37...not much younger than you....and let me tell you...she rocks at it. I see the letters and gifts she gets each year from her students parents. They adore her.

I will say, she's flexible, she meets each student 'where they are at'...and she just loves kids. She has all the academic skills, but I think those three things make her a smashing success. (I know I couldn't do it...but I knew that 30 years ago when I babysat!)

If you feel you would love doing this....go for it.

Thank you so much for your replies Should I just ask around at preschools to see if they'd take me on? I thought you needed college training first?

I don't know if it's mandatory but you want to have it. I started teaching at 47 and caught every bug the kids brought into the building the first two years. A bout of flu my second year teaching convinced me to get the flu shot every year for the rest of my life. At 48, it knocked me for a loop and had me in bed for over a week. I'm not doing that again.

Not to be an aide, especially at private preschools. As far as being the actual teacher, it depends on the state, whether it is private or public, and experience. Yes, call around, explain that you are interested, and ask if they would consider hiring you and the particulars. Some pay decent, some pay hardly squat. Good luck.
