Just out of curiosity, how many of you middle school/junior high teachers have world language classes at your schools? I teach at a large (about 800 students) junior high and we only have one semester length Spanish class which I teach. I'm curious how many of you have language programs at your middle schools and what size school you teach in that supports these programs.

Sounds about the same. We have 7 middle schools (grades 6-8) in our district ranging from 500-1,100 students. Currently offering only Spanish in 8th grade. In high school it's Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese and American Sign Language. When I was a kid I had Spanish from 5th grade on (in CA) with French offered 6th grade on.

Quite the selection at your high school. Do the kids start with high school level Spanish I and have a college level Spanish V when they are seniors? I taught at one district where students could start Spanish I as 7th graders and could take Spanish VI as seniors.
I teach in an elementary school (k-6) and we only have one world language. My son's middle school (7-8) of about 975 students offers French, Spanish and German.

Does the ASL class count as a foreign language credit?

On the East Coast, Spanish is the only language taught consistently in middle school - in my district starting in 7th grade.
I knew a person once that grew up within 20 min drive to the border with Quebec. Her school did not offer French.
Our district offers Spanish in elementary (specials/enrichment), Spanish in MS (both a Spanish 1 and 2, which can (together) count towards one year of HS credit, or 1F, which is equivalent to one year of HS Spanish, and Spanish, French, Japanese, Mandarin, Latin, and ASL in HS.

I have to add the only students who take a language (German) in 7th grade are those who were in elementary language immersion and the class they take in 7th is more advanced because of it . The others start foreign language in 8th.
