Do you think it's demeaning for a fifth grader to be asked to read a book like "The cat sat on a mat" kinder level? I'm often asked by these kiddos why they have to read baby books. Isn't there some way to provide them with reading material that is more appealing to an eleven year old that is several grade levels behind in their reading?
Yes, they do have books like that. Ask the reading specialist at one of the building where you work.
I used to sub in a HS reading program that had books that high school age children enjoyed starting at the late 1st grade reading level. Sometimes, it was surprising to see a book about dating, sports, cheerleading, etc. with drawings or photographs of HS age kids written at a much lower level.
They did a lot of non-fiction books, too.
BTW, if they had cool age appropriate pictures I bet that they could do "The cat sat on a mat" for 5th graders, or HSers, too.
